Cairo
Street Children Development Co-operation Project

Kulttuurikameleontit ry is starting
up a
development co-operation project covering the years of 2010-2013 in
order
to improve the literacy, vocational skills and the social status
of the street children and mothers in Cairo. One important
goal of the
project is to enhance the visibility of the street children problemacy
- only a visible problem can be
solved!
Our Methods
- Education
and Vocational Training: To train and counsel social workers for
our Egyptian partner
Hope Village Society; to develop and improve primary education
and vocational training offered
to the street children in the shelters, with a special emphasis on
literacy.
- Cultural Events: To organize
cultural events that make the reality of the street children
visible through drama and music performances to audiences in Cairo
venues.
This way the street children problemacy will be given a visible human
face.
Through these methods we aim at improving the street children’s
and mothers’ self-esteem and practical,
vocational skills. This all will also improve their prospects of making
real choices about their future.
Co-operators
in Egypt and in Finland
Kulttuurikameleontit
ry is an
independent Finnish non-profit association. Our local partner, Hope
Village
Society,
is an Egyptian non-profit association with experience of twenty years
on working with street children and mothers
in Cairo. The association has a four-step model to approach the street
children and their special needs based on their
long fieldwork experience. The association has several field clinics,
day centres and short-term and permanent shelters
to support the children at every stage of their rehabilitation process
towards a full membership in society.
We have applied for funding fot the
project from the Finnish Foreign Ministry. We also co-operate with
Finnish polytechnics by jointly organizing their students'
international practise with the HVS in Cairo.
